Found on the recommended foods lists of many major diets--including the Atkins diet, the South Beach diet, and the new Mediterranean diet--salmon is a favorite food among nutritionists. It is a celebrated food among both dietitians and dieters, for both its flavor and its health benefits. In addition, salmon is relatively inexpensive, and in most parts of the country is priced comparably to beef and other meats.

What's So Great About Salmon?

First of all, salmon is a great source of protein. Like all meat, and especially fish, salmon contains all the essential amino acids that the human diet needs. Recently, high-protein diets are very popular thanks to their ability to promote rapid weight loss. Proteins are a source of energy, and also are used to build muscle tissue and to strengthen the immune system.

Also, salmon is one of the greatest natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids. These omega-3s are used by the body to create natural anti-inflammatories. In addition, current research suggests they may act as mood stabilizers, and may help fight depression and bipolar disorder. Anthropologists believe that early humans ate much more seafood than modern humans do, and that we may be lacking in omega-3s.

Furthermore, the red color of salmon comes from the krill that it eats. Specifically, the pigment is called astaxanthin, and it is a powerful antioxidant, which is good for the body. Finally, salmon have some of the lowest mercury retention rates of all fish, so mercury contamination is not a big worry. With all these health benefits of salmon, it's easy to see why everyone has been recommending it.
