Antioxidants

It seems that all we hear about anymore is the power of antioxidants in fighting off illness and disease. The good news for tea drinkers is that green tea in particular is loaded with antioxidants that can prevent free radicals from doing damage to healthy cells. When free radicals do damage to healthy cells, cancer can be the end result.

Antioxidants are molecules that can interact safely with free radicals and actually halt the chain reaction before healthy cells get damaged or destroyed. They can also seek out free radicals and destroy them in their tracks. Vitamins C and E are two powerful antioxidants that are also found in many fruits and vegetables, but in smaller concentrations than what is found in green teas.

Perhaps the most powerful antioxidant found in green tea is called epigalloctechin 3-gallate, also known as EGCG. This antioxidant is believed to be much more powerful than both vitamins C and E. In fact, EGCG is said to be 100 times more effective than vitamin C, and 25 times more effective than vitamin E, at stopping free radical damage in the body.

Powerful Antioxidants for Good Health

When free radicals go on to cause tissue damage at the cellular level, which damages the DNA, the results can be catastrophic. Cancer, heart disease, and aging are all attributed to cellular damage caused by free radicals. Fortunately, powerful antioxidants can stop free radicals in their tracks, before they damage the cells in the body and cause illness and disease. Drinking green tea for health is smart, because the antioxidants found in green tea are proven cancer fighters, and preventing cancer is a much better alternative than treating cancer.
