Unless you're already a tea aficionado, you probably don't know what a trivet is. A trivet is simply the base a teapot is set on to keep it from damaging table tops and other surfaces. A trivet is like a plate or stand for a teapot. They're necessary accessories for hardcore tea drinkers.

Cast Iron Trivets

Most trivets are made of cast iron. Cast iron is the perfect material to make a trivet from because it will not be damaged by the hot teapot and it will not transmit that heat to the counter or table top. The trivet will get warm from a piping hot teapot, but it will not burn the surface it rests on. Many teapots are also fashioned from cast iron and a cast iron trivet makes an ideal complement.

Trivets are usually in the shape of a ring. They're circular pieces of cast iron with a hole in the middle that makes them resemble a doughnut. Most have small feet on the bottom to better protect surfaces from heat. They come in many colors, so you can get one to match your tea set if you wish, or you can make a bold statement with an eclectic set of mismatched cups, pots, and trivets.

Cast iron trivets are an extremely affordable tea accessory. They generally cost less than $10 from a good Internet tea vendor. If you buy one from your local tea store, though, you'll probably pay a good deal more. Considering the damage a scalding hot teapot can do to a table or counter, it is advisable to use a trivet whenever possible.
