Catechins are found in green tea and are widely believed to have some preventative properties against illness and disease. More specifically, they are flavonoid phytochemical compounds that have strong antioxidant capabilities, and they are often referred to as "tea flavonoids". Catechins are also found in chocolate, black tea, grapes, and wine.

The four catechins found in green teas include: gallocatechin (GC), epigallocatechin (ECG), epicatechin (EC), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Since green tea is not fermented like black tea, it seems to retain higher amounts of catechins than black tea. Scientists speculate that the drying and fermentation process of black and oolong teas reduces the concentrations of these catechins. Therefore, green tea is sometimes referred to as natural tea, as very little is done in terms of processing it for consumption.

Powerful Antioxidant Catechins

Catechins have such powerful antioxidant properties that it is believed that they help the body fight off free radicals, which can lead to cancer and other diseases. Free radicals damage healthy cells, which can lead to aging, heart disease, and a host of other common medical conditions. In addition, the EGCG in green tea is believed to repress the growth of bacteria such as E.coli and staphylococcus aureus.
