According to a study in Archives of Internal Medicine, it was shown that adults with high cholesterol were able to reduce their LDL and total cholesterol levels by taking a green tea supplement enriched with theaflavin. Theaflavins are specific kinds of flavonoids, which offer very potent antioxidant properties.

Theaflavins are produced during the process of fermentation when green tea becomes black tea. Studies suggest that theaflavins in enriched green tea help lower cholesterol significantly in people who were following a low fat diet. In fact, the outcome of that study showed LDL cholesterol, also known as "bad" cholesterol, dropped by 16 percent, and total cholesterol dropped by 11 percent.

This drop in cholesterol, especially the bad cholesterol by 16 percent, could lower the risk of a heart attack or stroke by as much as 24 percent, according to previously published studies. If enriched green tea can lower such risks by that much, it is a wonder that more people are not drinking this beverage or taking supplements on a daily basis.
