Glucosamine and chondroitin are naturally occurring substances found in the body. More specifically, glucosamine is a form of amino sugar that plays a role in cartilage formation and repair. Chondroitin is responsible for giving cartilage its elasticity. Without proper amounts of these substances, the cartilage can become worn down and unable to repair itself, which causes joint pain and inflammation.

One of the benefits of green tea is that it has anti-inflammatory properties, which are great for arthritis pain relief. Green teas contain compounds that can reduce inflammation and help with the pain associated with osteoarthritis. The catechins found in green tea are said to be chondroprotective, meaning they help slow down the break down of cartilage in arthritic patients.

Patients seeking relief from arthritis may also benefit from taking supplements containing glucosamine or chondroitin. People who have taken these supplements have reported feeling pain relief similar to that of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and aspirin. There has been some research done that indicates these supplements might also slow down the rate of cartilage damage in people with osteoarthritis.

If you begin taking glucosamine chondroitin, you may experience increased intestinal gas and softened stools. Changing brands may help, but if not you might want to stop taking these supplements altogether. Likewise, if you do not feel any relief within six to eight weeks, you will likely not experience any relief from glucosamine chondroitin supplements, and should explore other pain relief remedies with your doctor.
