It has been shown again and again through studies that green tea lowers high cholesterol in people whose cholesterol levels have not responded to diet and exercise alone. The introduction of green tea to one's diet, either through supplements or through regular drinking, can protect one from increased levels of total cholesterol as well as LDL cholesterol, also known as the "bad" cholesterol. This is significant because higher levels of LDL cholesterol has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and hypertension.

For obvious reasons, many people prefer to try green tea for high cholesterol before resorting to harsh prescription medications that can cause adverse side effects. If you do not like the taste of green teas, you can buy enriched green tea supplements that come in capsule form. The catechins in green tea are widely believed to have preventative properties that keep cholesterol levels from creeping up to unsafe levels.

The studies that have been done on patients with high cholesterol involved a low fat diet. More studies need to be conducted to learn if and how green tea affects cholesterol in people who do not eat a low fat diet. Many people who treat their high cholesterol with green tea also use other natural herbs such as garlic and gugulipid to lower levels. Other natural remedies include red yeast rice, soy protein, and niacin.

If you have been diagnosed with high cholesterol, it is wise to discuss your treatment options with your doctor. Many physicians will recommend natural remedies before they opt for more potent prescription drugs. In some stubborn cases, prescription drugs are necessary in order to get the cholesterol down to safe levels again. Patients can still use green tea while taking prescription meds for other health benefits.
