Green teas are known for their many health benefits, as they are loaded with antioxidants that are known to fight off many ailments, including cancer. Green tea originally came from China about 5,000 years ago. However, the majority of high quality green teas that are sold on the market today are from Japan. You can certainly buy green tea from China, as well as some other countries, but Japan hails as the leading producer of the finest green teas in the world.

Many consumers unknowingly purchase poor quality green tea when they visit the local supermarket, as they are not aware that the best green tea is sold mainly through specialty stores or online venues. In Japan, green tea is harvested three to four times per year, and the first harvest typically yields the highest quality tea. Grocery stores often carry green teas that came from later harvests, and therefore are not the best quality.

Keep in mind that the shelf life of a high quality green tea is about six months for an unopened bag. If you keep the unopened bag in the refrigerator, you can extend the shelf life to almost a year. Once you do open the bag however, you have limited time to enjoy your green tea, as the shelf life drops to about two to three months. Remember as well that green tea does not like exposure to oxygen, so look for teas that come in air-tight containers, with the oxygen being replaced by nitrogen for optimal freshness.

In order to ensure that you are buying superior quality green tea, always ask where the supplier gets the green tea, which ideally should be from Japan. Also, refrain from buying green teas that come from the later harvests, as they are not as good as those from the first harvest.
