When a game is given honors like "Party Game of the Year," "Mensa Select," and "The National Parenting Center Seal of Approval," you know there has to be a good reason for it. "Apples to Apples Jr." has received these awards for a very simple reason. The game teaches children skills that will serve them well all throughout their lives.

Apples to Apples Jr: Learning to Think Outside the Box

Out of the Box Publishing is, appropriately enough, the maker of Apples to Apples Jr. The object of the game is to do just that ... to think outside of the box to come up with creative connections between things that may not be readily obvious.

A Sample of the Fun

Let's say you had the following items to choose from: "Mount Rushmore," "Jerry Seinfeld," "Balloon" and "The Revolutionary War." Which of those items would you choose to best match a description like, "Magnificent"? Maybe Jerry Seinfeld because he is magnificently funny? Maybe Mount Rushmore because it is a magnificent monument? Maybe the Revolutionary War because of its magnificence as an historical event?

For each round, a person takes a turn being a judge to decide which player made the best connection between an item and a description. As you can see from the above example, the decision can be hard because a good argument can be made for each connection. Players can often have an equally challenging task before them. Given the same items, which one would you choose to best match the description, "Delicious"? The possibilities for fun and creativity are endless.
