Bareboat SailingWritten by Blaire Chandler-Wilcox Bareboat sailing is all about you, your boat, and the open water. It is the epitome of ultimate freedom. Nothing to consider except your own whims and desires, as you take each day as it comes. Bareboat Sailing: On the Sea, You and Me, Oh How Happy We'll BeEven crewed boats can't come close to the independence offered by a bareboat sailing experience. Not even a private charter with a captain affords this kind of flexibility and freedom. See an island you want to explore? Turn the wheel and go. See some dolphins dancing in the distance? Turn the wheel and go. Whatever you fancy, whatever the time of day, it's completely up to you and your traveling companions what each day holds. When it comes to requisite experience, many chartering companies don't require actual certification. Most are satisfied with your word that you're an experienced hand. A minimum of two people are required to have sailing experience on any bareboat sailing charter. Many offer pre-board classes to make sure you're up to the task. After that, you're on your own. Many bareboats mean exactly that: what you need to sail the boat and sleep in the boat. However, there are many more upscale options for bareboats. Some will not only point you in the right direction for your provisions, but will actually stock them based on a shopping list you provide in advance. Also, most provide linens, towels, shampoo and the like, but do inquire to make sure. Check, too, to see what activity equipment is provided, so that should you decide to snorkel off the coast of Corfu you can, or if you prefer to picnic on a little volcanic island off St. Lucia you don't have to worry about packing your treats in plastic bags.
