Medals are a sort of trophy for a special achievement. They are often circular and made from brass, silver, gold, or bronze. Most are attached to a ribbon so they can be worn around a neck.

A medal can be won in various events including sports or athletics, academics, contests, and in the military. A military medal is very distinguished and difficult to earn. There are nearly 20 types of U.S. Military medals.

Military Medals

The highest military medal is the Medal of Honor. Other notable honors are the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, and the Purple Heart. More simple and frequent honors can be earned as well such as for good conduct.

Military medals are awarded for a strong, noble, and/or heroic performance. Awards are given in each branch of the military. There are also awards for the Women's Army Corps.
