A military ID tag serves as identification in the armed forces. Identification is important so that the status of every soldier is known and families can be informed. ID tags are a standard item issued to soldiers in war.

Military ID Tag Properties

A military ID Tag is most often a plate of metal attached to a chain. It is typically worn around the neck. The tags were made from metals such as lead or brass.

Each military ID tag had certain information engraved on each side. On side of the tag gave information about the war and time period. The other side included more personal information such as name, regiment, and branch of service.

ID tags in the Civil War are particularly interesting. No Government issued ID tags were ever found from that time. Therefore, soldiers had to purchase and engrave their own ID tag in order to be identified.
