A US military medal serves as a trophy for excellent service in the armed forces. They are worn as a pin, or with a ribbon around the neck. Medals are made from gold, silver, brass, or bronze.

The are about 20 types of medals in the military. Each US military medal represents a different act of good service. They are given in every branch of the armed forces.

Types of US Military Medals

US military medals can be awarded for various reasons. Most are considered to be very distinguished and hard to earn. Each medal is listed in order of importance.

The highest honor in military medals is the Medal of Honor. Other notable awards include the Silver Star, Purple Heart, and Distinguished Medal of Service. There are also more simple and frequent awards such as for good conduct that can be won.
