South Dakota Elk Hunts

Elk are truly magnificent animals. Once upon a time, the land we now call South Dakota was densely populated with elk. They would range from the Black Hills in the west, all the way to the prairies of the east. Sadly, the elk were wiped out altogether. By 1889, the year South Dakota officially became a state, not a single elk remained.

In the early part of the 20th century, the fight to reestablish the elk population began. It has been a success, if not a resounding one. Wild elk once again roam the prairies and hills of South Dakota, but with a population of only 2,000 or so animals. Because there are still so few wild elk roaming the state, hunting elk is a privilege reserved for residents only. People travel from all over the world to hunt South Dakota's pheasants, foxes, coyotes, buffalo and ducks, but they may not hunt elk.

For residents of South Dakota, however, elk hunting provides an incomparable thrill. The animals are glorious, and their antlers make truly beautiful trophies. An elk hunting trip is the father/son trip of a lifetime. It can also make an incredible business opportunity. If you are wooing a client who loves to hunt, he'll surely be impressed with a weekend of elk hunting.

Elk love wide open spaces. Even if you are a resident of South Dakota, you will want to stay at a hunting lodge for the best possible elk hunting experience. Look for a private ranch with immense acreage.
