For serious puzzlers, finding a challenging puzzle can be a difficult task. The easiest way to increase the challenge is to increase the number of pieces, but unfortunately bigger doesn't always mean harder. It usually just means "longer to complete." If you're looking for a really challenging puzzle, you need to look beyond standard cardboard puzzles.

Difficult Wooden Jigsaw Puzzles

Wooden puzzles are not by definition more difficult than cardboard puzzles. They are made from a different material, but they can still be cut with the same old piece shapes. The best puzzle makers, however, recognize the need for something different and have incorporated new cuts and designs in their wooden puzzles.

One of the reasons that high-end wooden puzzles are more difficult is that they often contain special "whimsy" pieces. These pieces (so named because in the old days they were cut at the whimsy of the puzzle maker) come in all sorts of shapes, from animals to vegetables to buildings. They make putting the puzzle together more interesting, and more challenging.

High-end wooden jigsaw puzzles also have much different shapes and cuts than traditional cardboard puzzles. Because wood is so much stronger than cardboard, wooden puzzles can use much more intricate and delicate shapes. They incorporate things like bisected corners, curved edge pieces and internal straight pieces.
