Modern computer cutting techniques now allow jigsaw puzzle makers to increase the complexity of their puzzle designs. They can now craft puzzles with unique overall shapes, and even with specially shaped pieces inside the puzzle! These pieces are usually referred to as "whimsy" pieces, since in the old days they were made on the puzzle craftsman's whim.

A wonderful example of a shaped wooden puzzle is one that contains a map of all of Great Britain. The pieces in this puzzle are actually cut according to the borders of each and every county in England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. If your geography is good, you'll have no trouble piecing back together the islands of Britain. If it's not, you'll certainly learn some new things along the way!

Another great idea for a shaped puzzle is the Royal Mail puzzle. The overall shape of this puzzle is that of a giant stamp (measuring 14 inches by 10 inches). Inside the big stamp are dozens of smaller stamps, and many of the pieces are actually cut out in the shape of the Queen's head.
