When people think of older gaming consoles like the Atari 2600, one of the games that usually comes to mind is Super Breakout. The game, distributed by Atari in 1978, is a game of practice, skill and hand-eye coordination. Super Breakout has a strong video game lineage, as it is a logical offshoot of the first video game Pong.

Users have likened Super Breakout to a game of handball. The object is to move your paddle back and forth in order to hit a bouncing ball against rows of bricks. Each time you hit a brick, it disappears. The object is to rid the level of bricks without missing a ricochet. If the ball passes by your paddle into the lower part of the screen, you lose a "life."

Downloading Super Breakout for Your Home Computer

There have been innumerable clones of Super Breakout developed for computer systems throughout the years. As one might guess, some of the earliest games for interactive multimedia like Flash and Shockwave were based on the original Atari game. For video game purists, though, there is nothing like the real thing.

Thankfully, gamers can now download the original video game ROM for Super Breakout and play it through Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator (MAME) software for their modern computers. This emulator software mimics the hardware of older gaming systems like the Atari 2600 and serves as a host for original game code that was read from cartridges. The MAME software is a free download, and the Super Breakout ROM can be legally licensed for an extremely small fee.
