Going to the dentist for a regular check-up and cleaning is an essential part to diagnosing periodontal disease. Any dental professional worth his salt will be able to recognize the beginning stages of periodontal disease. A hygienist should measure the space between your gums and your teeth to tell if periodontal pockets are developing. This is a sign of periodontal disease.

If your gums are red, swollen, bleeding, and/or sore, those are also signs of periodontal disease. You should discuss your home dental routine honestly with your dentist or hygienist so that he can point out ways you can improve. Your dentist can also determine how far the disease has advanced and whether improving home care is enough of a treatment.

If your dentist determines that improving your home care regimen will be sufficient to treat the periodontal disease, you must commit to making the change. We all get used to our morning and evening routines and it can be difficult to adjust. You must, however, make the choice that healthy teeth and gums are worth it.
