Gum Diseases

We've all heard the warnings about the dangers of gum disease, but for whatever reason they sometimes fall on deaf ears. When most people go to the dentist, if they go to the dentist, they are told that they need to improve their oral care regimen at home. Of course everyone wants healthy teeth, but not everyone is conscientious enough to take care of their teeth.

Our teeth serve two very important functions. First of all, we need our teeth to eat. When teeth are healthy and strong, we can chew food better and without discomfort. Gum disease can cause pain when eating and drinking.

Secondly, our teeth are an essential part of a beautiful smile. A beautiful set of teeth can brighten up any face, and those who are ashamed of their teeth are often reluctant to smile at all. If you take care of your teeth, they will not only take care of you, they will help you put your best face forward.

The Importance of Good Oral Care

If you want your teeth to last a lifetime, you have to give them a lot of attention and care. One of the most important things you can do for your teeth is to brush them regularly. Brushing your teeth removes any debris that may have built up on the teeth from food. Plaque also builds up on teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that develops on the teeth. If not removed, the bacteria can produce acid that eats away at tooth enamel and can lead to tooth decay.

Flossing is also an important part of oral care. No toothbrush can get into the tiny crevices between teeth effectively. Floss is the only thing that can remove plaque and debris from this area sufficiently. Plaque can develop beneath the gum line if you don't floss, and that can lead to bone loss and eventually tooth loss.

Treating Gum Disease

If caught in time, most gum disease can be treated and reversed. The first step to reversing gum disease is to improve oral care habits at home. You'd be surprised what a difference committing to flossing every day can do for the health of your teeth.

Some have found that using a warm water and salt solution before or after brushing can help ease the symptoms of gum disease. This can also be effective before or after flossing. This may help with the symptoms of gum disease, but it will not prevent the problem from reemerging.

The most effective way to treat gum disease is to kill the bacteria in plaque. This can be done with a antibacterial mouthwash or an alternative remedy. Only by killing the harmful bacteria in plaque will you be able to turn the tide on gum disease. If gum disease has been left untreated for a significant amount of time, improving oral care may not be enough of a treatment. That is when you have to seek the help of a dentist or periodontist.
