Depression is a disease that was until recently very misunderstood. A person suffering from depression feels "blue," but this is a persistent feeling of being down that doesn't go away after a few weeks. Depression is now known to be a serious disease, and is recognized as a possible factor in many suicides. If you suspect you are suffering from depression, you should consult a medical professoinal before taking any action, including home treatment.

Dealing with Depression

Many people are reluctant to seek help with depression because they are uncomfortable talking about their feelings. Others are afraid that a doctor will force you onto medications. Indeed, one of the most common courses of treatment for depression involves seratonin-specific reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which address a possible chemical basis of depression.

No doctor will force you onto SSRIs, though, as the drugs can be hard to wean yourself off of. Dealing with depression is a very personal battle, and nobody should tell you which approach is best for you. Some people like medication, some prefer personal psychotherapy, and others consult natural cures for depression. Whichever way you go, make sure that you are under the supervision of a professional in that field.

If you do decide to seek natural or herbal cures for depression, there are a number of options. In addition to herbs like St. John's wort, peppermint, and rosemary, there are non-herbal ways to address depression. Adding a balanced diet and regular exercise to your course of treatment can never hurt, and many people find these simple cures to be the best. Opinions vary, though, so make sure you do what is right for you.
