Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is one of the most debilitating diseases known to man, but it works on a very slow scale. The disease is believed to be a result of a gradual demyelination--in which your immune system slowly attacks the fatty tissue that lines your nerve cells. As a result, nerve signals often are incomplete or broken, and as the disease progresses, the body loses its ability to communicate with itself.

The disability caused by MS manifests over a period of about five to 15 years, and frequently appears and relieves itself sporadically. The exact cause of MS is unknown, but it is suspected to have to do with both heredity and an environmental factor in early childhood. The majority of MS patients are female, and early-onset MS affects nearly three times as many females as males.

Living with Multiple Sclerosis

There are a vast number of drugs still in testing for treatment of MS, but no sure cure has shown itself. Because of the long course of the disease and the lack of a conventional remedy, most people focus on making the disease as comfortable to live with as possible. This usually involves a specific diet, as well as other healthy choices. In some, proper diet and nutritional supplements have helped them live more fully, due to the increase in energy.

Often, MS is accompanied by depression. This may be the worst part of the disease, at least in early stages, but there are many natural remedies to depression. Exercise helps fight depression, and also is recommended as a way of managing the symptoms of MS. Rosemary and St. John's wort are popular herbal remedies for depression, and studies are suggesting that omega-3 fatty acids may also act as a mood stabilizer.
