Prevent Periodontal DiseaseWritten by Christa Gatewood While periodontal disease is treatable, it is far easier to prevent periodontal disease than to cure it. The best way to prevent periodontal disease is to establish good dental habits early in life. Children should be taught to practice good oral care at an early age. Creating Good Dental Habits at an Early AgeToddlers can learn to brush their teeth under supervision. This should be part of every child's morning and bedtime routine. Creating this habit early will benefit the child later in life. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to teach children to floss early on. This will have to wait until the child is a little older. One of the best ways to teach a child to floss is by example. A child should witness her caregiver flossing as a part of the evening routine. When a child is old enough to floss, possibly when adult teeth begin to emerge, the child should be encouraged to make it a habit. An antiseptic mouthwash can also be added to the dental routine when the child is old enough not to swallow it. Getting a child started with good dental habits will prevent periodontal disease in the future. If you were not the beneficiary of such training as a child and have established bad dental habits, it is not too late. Getting a healthy mouth can be as simple as making a commitment to brush and floss regularly. To follow through on this commitment, you should prescribe a rigid routine for yourself to follow. For example, specify a particular time at night when you will brush, floss, and rinse with a mouthwash. Try to keep to that routine as much as possible.
