Most people have heard of gingivitis at least from advertisements for toothpastes, toothbrushes, and mouthwashes. Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease. Although the symptoms of gingivitis are typically minor, it is a serious condition mostly because if left untreated it can progress into a more serious gum disease.

The symptoms of gingivitis are red and swollen gums. Sometimes these gums can bleed and become sore. The majority of people in America have some level of gingivitis, but the symptoms are often so mild they don't even notice anything is wrong. A dentist will be able to evaluate you to determine if indeed you have gingivitis and how you can effectively cure it.

Curing Gingivitis

Most gingivitis is easily cured by changing your personal oral care habits. Brushing more frequently and consistently is a major part of this improvement. Likewise, flossing everyday is very important. A dentist can tell you if there are additional steps you need to take to get your gums in tip top shape. These additional steps may include using a mouthwash or having a professional cleaning done more frequently, such as every three months.

If you follow the advice of the dentist you should see a drastic improvement by the time you are scheduled to return to the dentist. The dentist will reevaluate the gingivitis and determine how well you are doing. Be sure to be honest with the dentist about your home care regimen. While it may be embarrassing to admit that you aren't doing exactly what you are supposed to be doing, lying about it will only hurt you. The dentist may be able to give you some advice and strategies that may help you do better.
