In addition, colic does not affect first born children any more than it affects last born children. One popular theory is that colic is the result of an immature digestive system that simply can not break down food properly yet. The result is excessive gas that gets trapped in the intestines and causes unbearable pain. The baby then cries for hours on end because he or she can't get any pain relief from the belly distress.
