White Noise Makers

There are several items both natural and man-made that can generate white noise, a sound in which all the frequencies in a given band are heard at the same intensity. In nature, sounds like a rain shower, the rushing water of a waterfall, or the crashing of a wave is perceived as white noise. Likewise, the sound of a fan, a vacuum cleaner, a car engine or radio static is white noise.

White noise is useful because it is a soothing sound and it blocks out other unwanted sounds. For that reason, many people use white noise for relaxation and to help them sleep. Because the natural forms of white noise are unpredictable, and it is impractical to run a vacuum cleaner to fall asleep, there are consumer sound machines on the market.

The Benefits of White Noise Makers

White noise sound machines are so small they can be placed on a dresser or bedside table. They are also great to travel with. Everyone has experienced a bad night's sleep in a hotel where the walls were a little too thin or stayed at a relative's house with a crying baby. Having a white noise machine in those situations is invaluable. You can guarantee a good night's sleep no matter where you go.

White noise machines are also useful for those who work in a noisy office and have trouble concentrating with many other conversations within earshot. Though they have different volume settings, the lowest setting necessary is recommended. Therefore, you don't have to worry about the machine disturbing anyone else.
