Small fiber sensory neuropathy is distinguished by "burning feet." The feet will feel a pain akin to burning, while at the same time sensitivity to extrinsic pain and temperature diminishes. This strange collection of symptoms can be very helpful in aiding doctors in diagnosing this difficult-to-spot disorder.

More commonly known neuropathy is classified as "large fiber." Such forms of neuropathy tend to be easier to spot, since the are more ways to measure and diagnose their symptoms. The small fiber variety, however, is more immune to testing, often making it very hard to confidently diagnose it.

Small fiber sensory neuropathy is often found in conjunction with large fiber neuropathy. As such, diabetics are more prone to developing such a condition, as their systems are more prone to neuropathy of any kind. While pain in the small fiber case if often mainly in the feet, this pain can spread to legs and possibly the hands and arms as well.

Treatment for this condition is the same as that of many kinds of neuropathy. Diabetics should continue to watch blood glucose levels carefully. Vitamin supplements, prescription drugs, and over-the-counter remedies can all aid the cause of recovery.
