Alternative Cancer TreatmentWritten by Patricia Tunstall Alternative cancer treatment offers other possible approaches to the treatment of cancer besides the standard methods accepted by the medical establishment. Naturally, people afflicted with cancer reach out for any hope of a cure for their disease, especially if standard procedures do not appear to be successfully eliminating the cancer. More than ever, modern alternative treatments provide an array of options that may be used in conjunction with accepted practice. "Cancer" is actually not one disease, but a group of different diseases--over 100 of them. They are all, however, notable for ravaging, abnormal growth of cells. The "C" word strikes fear into anyone who hears it in a diagnosis, but increasingly, standard and alternative cancer treatments provide encouraging management of the disease. What Is Standard Treatment for Cancer?Generally, the medical establishment uses surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy to treat cancer. Each of these can be used alone, with the other two, or in conjunction with alternative cancer treatment. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) involves approaches that can be used to complement standard treatment or are alternatives to it, such as possible herbal remedies for cancer. Surgery consists of excising the cancerous tissue; it is used successfully for some types of cancer, meaning, it cures the cancer, which does not recur. Radiation therapy involves high-energy x-rays to destroy cancer cells, so it is a local treatment intended to shrink a tumor before surgery, prevent the recurrence of the tumor after surgery, or destroy cancer cells elsewhere in the body. Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. What Is Alternative Cancer Treatment?Every year seems to bring news about a "miracle" cure for some type of cancer, or an alternative cancer treatment that, though not accepted by Western health practitioners, works wonders where standard treatment failed. Needless to say, these claims should be thoroughly investigated. The medical establishment may be conservative in its outlook on medical treatment, but it also conducts clinical trials designed to prove or disprove the claims of such alternative treatment. On the other hand, it wasn't too long ago that orthodox medicine rejected or downplayed the importance of cancer diet information, vitamins, meditation, and herbs in the treatment of cancer. Today, the attitude of Western healthcare workers leans more in the direction of using CAM therapies where feasible and allowing the patient to alleviate pain and mental anguish through alternative cancer treatment. Clinical trials are attempting to determine the efficacy of vitamins E and C, tea, Essiac tea, garlic, and many other substances in the prevention and treatment of cancer. Even more significant, some major hospitals are doing research on such Eastern approaches to medicine as healing through the body's life force, and are integrating these practices into the treatment of their patients. Where Can You Find Information about Alternative Cancer Treatment?Fortunately, there are any number of websites that are reliable and that offer extensive statistics and information about cancer. You can do a search for "alternative cancer treatments," or go into the sites of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and People Living with Cancer. Sites that are based on acceptance of the possibilities of energy healing include The Center for Frontier Medicine in Biofield Science, and The International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine. If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with cancer, you undoubtedly want to explore all avenues of information about this increasingly treatable disease.
