Chemotherapy For Prostate Cancer

Chemotherapy drugs are used to treat patients with prostate cancer. Chemo, known as the anti-cancer drug, is given intravenously, by injection, or by mouth. The goal is to destroy the cancerous cells in the body by impeding their growth and reproduction. Prostate cancer patients may opt for chemotherapy in conjunction with radiation for the best outcome.

Unfortunately, chemotherapy brings with it many unpleasant side effects that can be extremely difficult for the patient, both physically and mentally. Many patients suffer from extreme nausea, relentless vomiting, painful mouth sores, fatigue, and hair loss. The good news is that there have been some new approaches to chemotherapy that have made this treatment less problematic.

Fractionated dose chemotherapy introduces chemo drugs into the body over an extended period of time, but in smaller doses. The idea is that the cancer cells will be exposed to the drugs longer, while the patient has diminished side effects. Most notable is a reduction in the magnitude of nausea and vomiting typically associated with traditional chemotherapy methods.

Chemotherapy for a Cancer-Free Future

If your doctor has recommended chemotherapy to you to destroy your prostate cancer, you probably feel frightened at the prospect of this treatment. However, the end goal is to rid your body of cancer that can wreak havoc on your internal organs. Make sure you have a support system in place, including your doctor, family, and friends that can help you through this trying time. When it is all said and done, you will probably be very glad that you opted for this treatment plan.
