Diverticulitis is just one of the possible signs that all is not well with your diet, and diverticulitis diets should be geared to improving your overall health, especially the health of your colon. Constipation and a buildup of colonic waste is a disaster for diverticulitis, so if you're serious about getting well, you will need to pay attention to cleansing and regulating your colon. It should be a priority to avoid anything that may make your colon worse. This includes all refined, processed foods, and anything containing chemicals and additives.

In order to heal the diverticuli, or little pockets that form in the colon, you will need to follow one of the special diverticulitis diets. It is very important that you make sure that the diet you choose has plenty of fiber to keep your system moving regularly. Constipation and colon stasis are main causes of diverticulitis.

Importance of Diverticulitis Diets

It is now known that over 50 percent of our immune system is situated in the colon. That means that if you have diverticulitis, your immune system is just as riddled with holes as your bowel is. No wonder people with diverticulitis and other colon issues often feel so bad in general. Appropriate diverticulitis diets along with colon cleansing strategies, such as colon hydrotherapy and enemas will help to reverse the situation.

However, in addition to diverticulitis diets you will probably need to undertake some form of cleansing to eliminate any residues of waste matter that have been lurking in your colon as a result of chronic constipation. Unless and until they are removed, such residues will remain to aggravate diverticulitis. Removing them will allow your body to absorb more nutrients from your food, thus raising the level of repair activity in the body so that you can begin to heal all over.
