Dental floss is now accepted as an important part of most people's daily hygiene habits. Only by flossing thoroughly can you be sure of getting the bacteria that hide between the teeth.

The Benefits of Flossing

According to dentists, failing to floss may mean that up to 65 percent of debris and bacteria remain in your mouth to wreak havoc. Bacteria feed on the remains of food in your mouth. As they feed they release dangerous acids into the oral environment which can produce sulfurous compounds, causing bad breath and a sour taste. As if that weren't bad enough, these acids can also eat through your tooth enamel and set up inflammation below the gum line.

This condition, if it is allowed to continue, will eventually lead to tooth decay and gum disease. So it's not difficult to see why thorough and constant oral hygiene measures are critical to the health of your smile. Together, brushing and flossing will help you overcome the problems of bad breath and tooth decay.

If you don't clean the plaque from your teeth every day, those deposits eventually harden into a substance known as tartar. This is particularly damaging to teeth. What's more it doesn't come off with mere brushing and flossing. Once things reach this stage you will need serious help from your dentist to save your teeth.
