In recent years, many people have been turning to natural antidepressants as an alternative traditional psychiatric medications. Many psychiatric meds require a period of dosage adjustment and switching. This is especially true with antidepressants. During this adjustment period it is likely that an individual will experience a few side effects of the medication, which can range from mild dizziness, to sexual dysfunction, to severe nausea.

Advocates of natural antidepressants believe that this period of adjustment can be just as, if not more detrimental to the patient than the disorder itself. They also cite the chemical dependency that can arise from the use of such medications, and the long term health problems that might ensue. Natural antidepressant are considered by many to deliver the most important effects of antidepressant meds, while reducing the severity of some traditional treatments.

Types of Natural Antidepressants

Some natural antidepressants function, much like medical antidepressants, as serotonin reuptake inhibitors. These remedies combat depression and anxiety by limiting the physical production of the neurological chemicals that produce them. One popular example of this type of natural treatment is St. John's Wort, which is available as a dietary supplement. St. John's Wort, and other natural antidepressants are usually sold in health food stores, which is actually frowned upon by some members of the medical community. This is because they are often sold on the advice of health food store employees, who lack the proper knowledge or qualifications to advise people about depression and anxiety.

Siberian Ginseng is an herbal extract that many people report highly positive experiences with. Siberian Ginseng acts in a fashion similar to medical MAO inhibitors, which act on serotonin, as well as other brain chemicals, including epinephrine and dopamine. It has been shown to aid the balance of neurotransmitters. As a result of this, Siberian Ginseng has proven effective in alleviating depression and promoting a sense of well-being.
