Alcohol Detoxification

Detoxification has been a part of alcoholism treatment since the beginning. It is an essential part of the treatment process as it allows an addict to become a proverbial clean slate and begin anew. However, there are a variety of different approaches to alcohol detoxification.

The Different Approaches to Alcohol Detoxification

Some experts advocate drug-assisted detox as a way of curbing some of the negative withdrawal symptoms that accompany detoxifying the body. These drugs can include but are not limited to Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), anti-anxiety medications, and sedatives. The problem with this method is that in some cases addicts can become addicted to these so-called "recovery" medicines. It would be a shame to trade one addiction for another.

Some experts advocate drug-free detox programs that involve a more holistic approach. Addicts are guided in a series of activities including exercise, controlled sweating in a sauna, and taking a vitamin regimen. The theory behind this kind of detox is that toxins from alcohol remain in the body trapped in fatty cells long after the alcohol itself has left the body. These toxins can be released through sweating and physical exertion. Once the toxins have been released as much as possible, the body will be in a better position to fight cravings both mental and physical.

These two schools of thought about detox differ dramatically. Choosing the right one is about deciding what's best for you. Which approach fits best into your personal life philosophy? Whatever you choose, it is important to go into the process with confidence and faith.
