Knowledge is the best weapon against drug addiction. Adults and young people in this country are uneducated about the effects of drugs and their prevalence in our society. Therefore, they are ill-equipped to make a change for the better. Each year 3,000,000 kids between the ages of 10 and 14 try illegal drugs for the first time. If we don't know what is going on, how can we hope to combat it?

Marijuana Is Not a Safe Drug

There are so many types of drugs out there, that it is hard to stay current on the possible dangers for your kids. Marijuana is one of the most common drugs amongst young people. In fact, it is the most commonly-used illicit drug in the country. Many people think smoking pot is not that big of a deal, and parents may even turn a blind eye to usage amongst their children. However, the problems that result from marijuana use cannot be ignored.

Smoking marijuana, like smoking cigarettes, can do serious damage to the lungs leading to emphysema and cancer. Prolonged usage can lead to what is called "burn-out." People who are burned-out are sluggish and unable to concentrate. Smoking pot damages brain cells and over time this can affect memory, concentration, learning, and coordination.

Marijuana use can also cause people to do reckless and dangerous things. These things can include but are not limited to traffic accidents, risky sexual behavior and criminal activity. These mistakes can cost the users and others their lives. Being educated on the effects of marijuana and other illicit drugs is essential to preventing young people from making decisions that could cost them their lives.
