Drug Addiction Treatment CentersWritten by Christa Gatewood In order to effectively treat drug addictions, one must understand what drugs do to the body and how addiction develops. Every addict has a first drug use. How that first drug use goes will help determine what role drugs will have in that person's life. If it was a good experience, and the high achieved was euphoric, the person might try the drug again. Getting Over Drug ToleranceWith continued usage the body will begin to adapt to the foreign substance and will start to build a tolerance. As a tolerance is built the body will require more and more of the drug in order to produce the same high. Eventually the drug may not even produce a high at all, but it will still be required simply so the user can function. Stopping use of the drug at this point is very hard because the body will experience withdrawal symptoms that can be very difficult to go through. This is called chemical dependency. When someone is chemically dependent in this way, it is nearly impossible to detoxify alone. That is when a treatment center is the best option. Drug addiction treatment can be given on an inpatient or outpatient basis, but inpatient care is the most effective kind. Inpatient care is so effective because a staff of professionals can monitor every move an addict makes 24 hours a day. The symptoms of withdrawal can be so severe that if you were to detoxify alone, the temptation to use may be too great. If you cannot go to a treatment center for all of the 30, 60 or even 90 days required, you should at least go to detoxify. Know your addiction well enough to know that it will get the best of you alone. After detoxifying, however, you must go to the outpatient care in order to have any shot at recovery.
