Sign Language Classes

Sign language classes are offered in many settings throughout the country. The most likely place to find them is at community colleges or universities. However, there are other ways to learn sign language or to supplement your knowledge. Here are a few ideas.

Looking for Sign Language Classes

Before searching for sign language classes in your area, research the language you want to learn. Yes, there are different sign languages, just as there are hundreds of spoken languages throughout the world. The most common one in the United States is American Sign Language, or ASL.

Your local library is a vast resource and probably has lots of information about deaf resources. You could ask them about classes, too. Other places to look are at adult education or continuing education programs, schools for deaf children, state and county special education departments, and through deaf-related organizations.

One other source for sign language classes is a publication called the American Annals of the Deaf. Each spring they publish a reference issue with a comprehensive listing of services and programs for the deaf/hoh population. These listings would be a good place to look into for information about classes.
