There are two primary lines of Nioxin products, each intended to serve a specific category of people dealing with thinning hair. People who have had their hair chemically treated, whether through dyeing or other means, can benefit from Nioxin's Bionutrient Protectives line of hair care products. The Bionutrient Actives line of products is intended for people with natural hair. Within these two groups are numerous shampoos, conditioners, topical treatments, and supplements, intended to eradicate the sources of several types of hair loss.

Many of the factors that can contribute to the appearance of thinning hair are external, such as stress, tension, environment, and restricted blood circulation at the scalp. Proper scalp circulation is crucial for growing strong, healthy hair. Scalp problems often interfere with the normal hair growth cycle, and the effect can be quite noticeable. While this can cause serious hair loss, it is often treatable. In the right circumstances, Nioxin hair care products can not only halt the onset of thinning hair, but also begin to restore the appearance of full, healthy hair.

Nioxin Hair Care and the Growth Cycle

The hair growth cycle consists of three parts. Hair first sprouts and grows during the Anagen phase of the cycle. Immediately following, the Catagen phase begins, during which the lower portion of the hair follicle is destroyed, in order to make way for the next growth. The final stage is the Telogen phase, during which the newly grown hair is at rest for a period, before being naturally shed from the body. Just as the body is constantly producing a number of hairs in the Anagen phase (about 85 percent of the head is usually in this phase), it is also constantly shedding hairs (about 50-100 a day).

Certain factors in the scalp environment can force hairs to enter into the Telogen phase prematurely, reducing the number of hairs in the Catagen phase. As a result, the growing hairs can start to massively outnumber the resting hairs, creating the appearance of thinning hair. Nioxin hair care products aim to isolate and treat any factors that might be causing this discrepancy, allowing the scalp to resume normal hair production. Because the causes can vary from person to person, Nioxin has developed an assortment of products designed to fight several different contributors to thinning hair.
