Custom fit ear plugs come in two main varieties. Both are affordable and effective. Deciding what kind is right for you is the first step towards protecting your hearing.

The first variety of custom fit ear plugs is a pliable earplug that conforms to the shape of your ear canal after insertion of the plug. The earplug is a soft material, most likely some combination of a fibrous material such as cotton or lanolin and beeswax. Quality earplugs expand to fill your ear canal, fitting snugly with little danger of falling out.

The second variety is an earplug that is crafted by a specialist from a mold of your ear canal. This ensures a perfect fit every time, and a level of comfort above other types of ear canal plugs. They are also generally more expensive, and sometimes the mold can be made to hold a specialty device such as a tiny speaker for monitoring audio broadcasts.

Applications for Custom Fit Ear Plugs
Moldable ear plugs are the best choice for blocking out as much sound as possible. Often tagged with NNR (noise reduction) ratings of 25-34 dB, they are second to none in preventing tinitus from prolonged exposure to the loudest noises. The second variety of earplug is better suited to a more delicate reduction of sound, such as that required by sound engineers. Clarity is maintained while the volume of sound entering the ear is reduced by as much as 25 dB.
