Custom Molded Ear Plugs

If you live or work in a noisy environment and have tried and rejected earplugs in the past, the custom molded ear plugs may be right for you. Normal earplugs, such as those crafted from plastic in a "flanged" design, lack the sort of flexibility that brings supreme comfort. The earplug can feel rigid inside the ear, and the length and size of the flanges may not fit well. Any gaps left by poorly-fitting flanges lead to weaknesses in the effectiveness of the earplug, and the resulting general discomfort can make wearing the ear plugs a chore.

The good news is that other kinds of comfortable ear protection are available. Foam earplugs are a little softer then those made from plastic. Custom molded ear plugs cast in silicone can be even softer, and a better fit for your ear. Molded ear plugs made from natural ingredients like cotton, lanolin, and beeswax can offer a great fit as well.

Are Custom Molded Ear Plugs the Answer?

The first criterion to look for when selecting an earplug is whether or not it has the appropriate NNR rating. This rating, administered by the EPA, tells the approximate reduction in decibels offered by the product. If you're directing airplane traffic out on a runway, for example, you may want to look at a product with a higher NNR rating than, say, a carpenter might need.

Once you've established an appropriate strength of earplug, ask to try out the product, and make sure it fits comfortably and securely inside the ear canal. If you're unsatisfied with the fit, inquire about custom options. Be sure to shop around online, too, many manufacturers will offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
