Blood Pressure Monitor Reviews

With the much-discussed rise in obesity in recent years has come a parallel rise in hypertension, or high blood pressure. Since high blood pressure is a risk factor for several serious medical conditions, many people are choosing to keep track of their blood pressure using a personal monitor. With hundreds of models on the market, how can you decide what is best for you?

There are several websites that offer reviews of blood pressure monitors. At the great majority of sites, these are consumer reviews, posted by users of the various instruments. The reviews are classified so that you can read reviews for a particular brand, all brands of a specific type of monitor, or all monitors in a particular price range. There are also sites which review the stores that offer blood pressure monitors, so you can check the level of service as well.

How to Use Consumer Reviews

Consumer reviews, though completely subjective and not held to any specific standards, can be very useful if you follow a few simple guidelines. First, use a site that is large enough to have several reviews for each product. This makes it less likely that the rating will be skewed by one reviewer. Stars and rankings are very important, but you should also read the individual reviews. This will tell you whether the monitor being reviewed meets your specific requirement. For instance, if you need a non-standard cuff size, a highly ranked monitor won't do you any good if only standard cuffs are available.

The Consumer Reports website presents professional reviews of blood pressure monitors according to their usual objective standards. This is very useful information, but it can't be accessed unless you are a subscriber to the paid site. Whatever type of monitor you buy, it should be certified by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation. Their website can be accessed for information on their certification standards, but the information on it is far too technical for most users.
