Certainly there are steps you can take to decrease your chances of developing liver disease. It should be noted that three big contributing factors that may lead to liver disease are alcohol abuse, sharing needles, and having unprotected sexual intercourse. Alcoholism can lead to chronic inflammation of the liver, which over time can turn into cirrhosis.

Basically, cirrhosis is severe scarring of the liver due to alcohol abuse. Hepatitis C, which can be contracted through unsafe sex and shared needles, also leads to liver disease. Patients who have been diagnosed with Hepatitis C should refrain from drinking any alcohol, as this greatly enhances the liver’s susceptibility to cirrhosis.

Certain environmental toxins and over the counter drugs can also lead to liver disease. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are two known painkillers that when taken in high amounts can adversely affect the liver. In addition, many herbal remedies come with a strong warning as they have the potential to cause liver problems in users. If your liver is compromised in any way, always consult a physician before taking any over the counter pain remedies.

Liver Disease and Lifestyle

A low fat diet can be a preventative measure against the development of liver disease. It is also recommended that regular exercise be incorporated into your daily life for liver disease prevention. Finally, managing stress and getting plenty of rest are two great ways to keep your body up to par and your immune system in high gear. Though liver disease can happen to anyone, taking certain safeguards such as eating well, exercising regularly, abstaining from alcohol and unsafe sex, and getting plenty of rest can go a long way in terms of prevention.
