Low calorie diets can help you lose weight, but it is important that you don't drop your caloric intake too low. The best weight loss programs take a gradual approach to dropping unwanted pounds, which means that you don't starve yourself or consume too few calories. Even if you are severely overweight, you should not plan dropping your caloric intake too much, because there could be adverse side effects.

Such side effects of low calorie diets can include: lethargy, irritability, headaches, dizziness, nausea, and low blood sugar. If you don't eat enough healthy foods every day that contain essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants, you will feel sick and weak. This is obviously not going to motivate you to stick to your diet. The key to long-term weight loss is to implement a lifestyle change that includes healthy eating, regular exercise, stress management, and plenty of sleep.

Do Low Calorie Diets Work?

Low calorie diets work for a short period, but they should not be maintained for a long period of time. Your doctor may recommend that you cut your calories back to get the ball rolling with your weight loss plan, but more than likely you will be advised to increase your caloric intake later on. This is especially true if you are going to be exercising regularly, because if you do not get enough calories, you will not be able to keep up with your workouts.

Without enough nutrition, you will feel depleted of energy, and that will only make you want to lay on the couch, instead of going to the gym or going for a walk. If you eat a balanced diet, get plenty of rest, and exercise regularly, you should be able to lose weight and keep it off. Don't forget that regular exercise also helps combat stress, which can also help you keep your weight down.
