Low carbohydrate diet foods are foods that tend to be high in protein, and sometimes high in fat. The Atkins Diet is comprised low carb foods that include: bacon, cheese, eggs, beef, fish, peanut butter, nuts, and diet bars that are high in protein. The Zone Diet also restricts the amount of carbs eaten, placing the emphasis on protein consumption.

Do these weight loss programs work? Well, low carbohydrate diet foods can help you lose weight initially, but they may not be the key to long-term weight loss. Low carb diets are based on the premise that carbohydrate-rich diets cause the body to produce more insulin, which yields in weight gain. However, the important thing to remember is that not all carbohydrates are to blame for this effect.

The Truth about Low Carbohydrate Diet Foods

Simple carbs contain empty calories, and these foods include: cookies, cakes, candy, jelly, syrup, white breads, chips, and doughnuts. These foods are digested quickly, and they can cause blood sugar levels to spike rapidly, only to plummet within an hour or two. This leaves a person feeling hungry, tired, and very crabby.

Complex carbs take longer to digest, and therefore they do not have this affect on the blood sugar. Such foods include: whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and brown rice. These foods are rich in vitamins and minerals, as well as fiber, which is necessary for our overall health. Remember, not all low carbohydrate diet foods are beneficial to our health, so if you are not clear about which choices are best, ask your doctor or a certified nutritionist for advice.
