Lymphedema TreatmentsWritten by Diane Sievert Lymphedema treatments are terribly important for individuals suffering from this affliction. Failure to recognize and treat lymphedema can have disastrous effects for not only is the swelling associated with lymphedema quite uncomfortable, extreme swelling that is not addressed can permanently alter the afflicted area. It is therefore vital that doctors, patients and insurance companies acknowledge the value of lymphedema treatments. Recognizing the Usefulness of Lymphedema TreatmentsMany in the medical profession have only recently become aware of lymphedema treatments and even fewer are quick to recommend them. That may seem surprising until you realize that the first center for lymphedema therapy in the United States wasn't established until the mid nineties. Like acupuncture, lymphedema treatments are a hotly debated topic as many are still questioning their effectiveness. The simplest and most efficient way to demonstrate the usefulness of these treatments is to look at before and after photos. A patient with extreme swelling of the left arm takes a picture of his or her situation before treatment. The reduction of swelling that takes place after undergoing lymphedema treatments is truly amazing when compared with the before pictures. This, in and of itself, won't be enough to convince any doctor or insurance company; before and after pictures of individual cases won't do much of anything if they're not accompanied by an unbiased statistical report. For an individual patient, such a report might be useful, but for lymphedema sufferers throughout the nation, it will be some time before there is significant change. And this change will only take place if more and more lymphedema patients and therapists start demanding proper recognition.
