Emergency Personal Response Systems

Many types of emergency personal response systems are on the market. Advancement in medical technology and communications is clearly shown in the types of devices available. With the push of a button, an elderly or disabled person can make a call for assistance at any time of the day or night. All it takes in most cases is to hold down the button for two seconds.

Some monitored systems have a medical record on file indicating the medications, allergies, past and present medical history, and diagnosis of current health issues. This information is crucial when the button is pushed and paramedics are required. Answering questions for the personnel initially treating the injured is crucial for the long-term recovery. For instance, if someone is a diabetic, it is important for the paramedics to have that information.

More about Emergency Personal Response Systems

With a personal emergency response system, help for an elderly parent living alone is as close as the button on a pendant or wristwatch. This system consists of a help button (a small radio transmitter), a special console attached to the telephone, and a trained professional to receive the calls at the response center. The appropriate individuals will be notified.

The emergency personal response systems can be rented, leased, or purchased. Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance providers will not cover the cost. Prices range from around $200 to as high as $5,000 to purchase. Added to the purchase price is a monthly monitoring fee of $10 to $30. Rentals will vary from around $15 to $50 per month. This may or may not cover all charges.
