Many people are affected dramatically by some type of heart disease or cardiac event. For some, it is a full cardiac arrest with CPR reversal. For others, it is the anxiety of wondering when a heart attack will hit. Still others live with angina, shortness of breath, and other symptoms and attribute them to everything from indigestion to getting old and out of shape. With the technology that is available, there is no reason for anyone to carry undiagnosed heart disease or risk.

The information that can be obtained with a simple electrocardiograph (ECG or EKG) can alleviate anxiety and give physicians basic information to formulate a diagnosis and course of intervention. The shape of the lines on the graph that prints out from the ECG identifies such things as arteriosclerotic heart disease, cardiac arrhythmias, electrolyte abnormalities, myocardial infarction, and cardiac enlargement. Early diagnosis is crucial in some of these to avoid permanent damage to the heart muscle.

There are many different types of ECG machines available to the medical community. If you are looking to purchase an ECG machine for a medical facility, it is important to do research into the many different configurations and capabilities of various ECG machines. Some even come with fax and communication abilities, if quick communication of findings is necessary. Others are equipped for easy mobility.

Diagnosing by Electrocardiograph Findings

Some irregularities are nearly impossible to define with electrocardiograph studies. These seem to disappear when the ECG is in process only to surface when the machine has disappeared. For this type of arrhythmia, electrophysiologic testing may be required. This is a process where the tachycardia is artificially induced by electrode catheters admitted through veins in the arm or leg to the heart. Once the electrical source of the irregularity is determined, it can be zapped.

Research, new medications, and advanced technology are all contributing to better heart health. For individuals with a high risk such as obesity, family history, smoking, and no exercise, it is crucial to have a complete medical examination by a healthcare professional. Heart disease can be treated if found early enough. A simple ECG is an easy way to get off to a good start with preventive care.
