Tamping Tools

Most tamping tools that are intended for public use fall into one of three categories: tampers for construction use, tampers for kitchen use, and tampers for use in producing customized dietary supplements. Despite their apparent lack of a common purpose, the main functions of all of these tools are, in actuality, very similar: to pack as much product into as small a space as possible. This seemingly benign purpose serves an important function in producing the strongest finished product possible.

Tamping tools for construction use are usually used for compacting concrete during the pouring stage of construction. When pouring large volumes of concrete into a single space, it is important to reduce the occurrence of air bubbles in the pour as much as possible. By using a tamping tool or a vibrating tool, builders can force the concrete to settle, filling negative space in the pour and producing a stronger finished product.

In the kitchen, the main type of tamping tool available is for home espresso machines. In order to make a robust, flavorful cup of coffee, the hot water must travel through as much espresso as possible. Tamping the ground beans evenly into the portafilter (the basket of espresso grounds through which the water travels when you pull a shot), with a correctly designed tamping tool helps produce a uniform density of espresso and a rich, full-bodied shot of coffee.

Tamping Tools for Capsule Filling Machines

Because they are designed to tamp many capsules at once, tamping tools for home capsule filling machines are shaped very differently from other tampers. They include a protrusion for every capsule that the filling machine can hold--from 50 or so to several hundred capsules. In many cases, the tamper is attached to a lever that lowers it precisely onto the filling tray, evenly compacting the material in all of the capsules. In order to reach their desired fill volumes, users may have to tamp the capsules once and then refill them, tamping again before capping the batch.
