A vital signs monitor is one of the most important pieces of equipment in the hospital room. The information gleaned gives a clear indication of the major bodily functions. The heart is clearly defined by rhythm, speed, and output. Any irregularity is quickly identified by the machine and an alarm notifies the nursing personnel of the change. If a patient experiences an episode of tachycardia, intervention can be initiated before the episode becomes life threatening.

If the blood pressure drops below a safe level, medication or a change of position may be indicated to facilitate the elevation to normal range. If the blood pressure is too high, the appropriate measures can be taken to lower the pressure out of the danger range. Sometimes it is a trial to get a critical patient's vital signs balanced within safe parameters. It is crucial to have an accurate, dependable vital signs monitor.

Uses for a Vital Signs Monitor

Oxygen level is another critical element to monitor. Patients in congestive heart failure or with some type of pulmonary compromise are susceptible to reduced oxygen content. The brain must have adequately oxygenated blood to avoid damage. Regulating the oxygen level is a matter of constant monitoring to maintain an optimal level.

Vital signs monitors come in a variety of styles. Portable monitors are used while transporting a critical patient. Monitors on wheels are used to go from room to room in the hospital to check vitals on patients at least twice daily. Medical offices often have monitors mounted in every examining room. The operating room and recovery room have need for a monitoring system to determine the expired gases of CO2, N2O, and other agents.
