Treating ailments and disease by holistic means is becoming increasingly popular. Finding holistic solutions to common problems used to require a trip to a specialty store, but now there are thousands of websites dedicated to holistic healing. Many people are taking medicinal research into their own hands and becoming more educated about side effects of prescription medicines and the benefits of holistic medicines.

Holistic medicine is available for almost any ailment. For instance, glucosamine and chondroitin are said to help joint pain--vitamin C and calcium can help prevent osteoporosis. Antioxidants help us fight free radicals that cause artery blockage and other ailments. Serotain is sold as a natural antidepressant and sleep aid.

Do Your Research

It seems everyone is an expert these days on holistic medicine. Every time I visit my parents I go home with some new holistic miracle that my mom has found. While researching herbs on the Internet is a good way to find out basic information, nothing can replace the knowledge of your family doctor. Talk with your doctor before beginning a new holistic medicine to make sure you can take it without any complications.

You'll also need to make sure that herbal medicines don't conflict with one another. Just as in man-made lab tested medicines, herbal medicines can have negative effects if taken in the wrong combinations. Seek the advice of an herbal specialist as well as your general practitioner to make sure you don't create any undesirable combinations.
