Running Knee Injuries

A runner can experience many aches and pains from his athletic endeavors, including what is called "runner's knee." This particular pain can be felt on the outside of the knee, where the illiotibial thigh band meets the knee bone. This tendon tends to rub against the bone when it becomes too tight, causing inflammation and pain.

Taking a break from running and putting the knee to rest can usually lessen the pain and reduce inflammation. However, as soon as the runner begins to jog or run again, the tendon will become tight, and inflammation will resume. This injury can take weeks to recover from and months to prevent from reoccurring.

Personal vs. Professional Treatment of Running Knee Injuries

As soon as pain is felt, an athlete can start the healing process by keeping pressure and weight off the knee, applying a cold wrap and elevating the knee above the heart to reduce swelling. Proper stretching of the iliotibial band will diminish the chances of hurting the area again. The runner can also take some glucosamine sulphate supplement pills to help the joint heal.

If the pain and discomfort is so debilitating that the runner can no longer walk or jog, professional help may be needed. A doctor will be able to prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs such as NSAIDs, while a sports massage therapist can aid to loosen up and lengthen the iliotibial tendon by working the surrounding muscles. If all else fails, an ultrasound and laser surgery treatment may be called for.
