All of the commercials that tell you that milk is good for your body are not lying. Milk contains calcium, which is known to contribute to healthy bones. Not everyone likes milk or can drink it, leading many people to lack the recommended daily level of calcium. If this is the case for you, you can purchase calcium supplements so that you do not need to be as concerned about your bone health.

Many people may rely just on a multi-vitamin to deliver all of the nutrients that they need to balance their diets. Since calcium carbonate takes up a lot of space, however, these pills often do not have the recommended daily amount. If you take a multi-vitamin with minerals, you should supplement it with an additional calcium tablet.

Things to Look for in Calcium Supplements

There are a few things that you should keep in mind when purchasing calcium supplements. First, be sure that you look at the elemental calcium content. This is the form in which the body can absorb calcium. Even if a pill says that it has 500 milligrams of calcium carbonate, it may only have 250 milligrams of elemental calcium, which is all that your body is getting.

You should also be sure that you know what form of calcium you are taking. For example, while calcium citrate can be taken any time of day, calcium carbonate is best taken after meals because it requires extra acid for it to be absorbed by the body. You should also look to make sure that the supplement meets U.S. Pharmacopeia standards. The USP label on supplements ensures that they will dissolve within a period of time that will allow them to be absorbed by the body. The USP label on calcium supplements also tells you that the supplement provides an adequate level of elemental calcium.
